Abstract

Food waste management represents one of the major challenges in Indonesia, which ranks as the second-largest food waste producer in the world (Syafaat & Syafaat, 2023). The MBG (Free Nutritious Meal) program has the potential to generate organic waste on a large scale that requires systematic handling. This research designs and develops a smart circular system based on the Internet of Things (IoT) and edge computing to manage MBG food waste efficiently and sustainably. The developed system integrates sensors for detecting the type and volume of waste, microcontrollers as edge processing units, and a cloud platform for real-time monitoring and data analysis. Through a circular economy approach, this system not only reduces waste but also converts food waste into valuable resources through bioconversion processes using maggots. Testing results demonstrate that the system is capable of classifying waste with high accuracy and providing rapid responses due to edge processing, aligning with previous research findings that achieved classification accuracy of up to 93.97%. This system is expected to serve as an integrated solution for MBG food waste management that supports environmental and economic sustainability.
